| What’s the History Behind Bumbershoot? | Bumbershoot is doing its 53rd festival this weekend, and today on the podcast we’re getting recommendations from music journalist & historian Martin Douglas. Martin, Ashley, and Sam also talk about the history of Bumbershoot and their own histories with it. [City Cast Seattle] | - Recommendations: Martin has a good combo of new and old for you to see. He mentions, of course, Bikini Kill and says they are ‘the most culturally significant punk band to ever come from the Northwest.’ He also recommends seeing No Name doing her album Telephone - ‘that f*cking rules.’ WITCH (We Intend To Cause Havoc) - ‘they put on such a great live show. - History: Did you know Bumbershoot was originally called the Mayor’s Festival? Mayor Wes Uhlman was impressed by New York Mayor John Lindsay’s art festival and decided to put together his own. It launched in 1971 and brought 120K to Seattle Center for the event. It was renamed “Bumbershoot,” a reference to the British slang for umbrella, as the festival was an ‘umbrella for all the arts.’ It continued to grow and moved to Labor Day Weekend in 1976. - Security: Security at Bumbershoot is getting a lot of attention after the recent shooting at Bite of Seattle, with Mayor Wilson working closely with SPD and the festival. | 🏞️ South Seattle parks renamed: A South Seattle garden and park have new names: César Chávez Demonstration Garden in Beacon Hill is now El Centro Demonstration Garden, and South Park’s César Chávez Park is now named Parque Libertad. The name changes result from allegations made in March after sexual abuse allegations came out against the labor leader. Parque Libertad was selected after a community naming process. [South Seattle Emerald] | | 🗳️ Uptick in rejected voter ballots: 20,000 ballots were rejected in Washington’s primary election last month because they came in too late, according to data from Secretary Steve Hobbs and Senator Maria Cantwell. This comes as the USPS has reduced service and also as the Trump administration is launching voter fraud investigations in Washington. Voter fraud is extremely rare.
